“Say “yes.”

When children hear “no” all the time, they become accustomed to it, and sometimes stop hearing it and just continue doing the wrong thing. Instead you can say “yes” and offer some choices. For example, when a student makes a request to do something inappropriate you can say:

“Yes, I can hear that you want to do that. It would be inappropriate right now. What else can you do instead?”

You are still saying “no” but in a much more positive way. Students can hear you better and listen more.

Thursday, July 10, 2008 Minuses can be turned into pluses. There are times in math problems, that several minuses can actually equal a plus. It is the same in life. Sometimes, negative circumstances can bring about pluses in your life and in the lives of children. Joshua was raised in a home filled with minuses. His dad left before he was born. His mom became an addict. She gave him to her mom, his grandma to raise. They never heard from his parents again. His grandma lived in poverty and had to work hard to put meals on the table for Joshua. Their little apartment was in a neighborhood that often had robberies and even shootings. When Joshua was little, he was sickly, and there were many days that his grandma had to skip work to stay home with him, and even some days when there was not enough money to take him to the doctor, and miraculously he would get well.
